Bonfires on Beaches
sun kissed salty boys with blond hair, and the girls
that tease them on ferris wheels. looking up to the
sky trying to predict the weather but not canceling our
plans even when it rains. pass me your drink, we
dance on the docks and run into the water before the
sun sets. we visit little islands where wild horses run.
i remember kayaking with my dad in the sound
somewhere in north carolina. dolphins swam next to
the boat and we tried to pet them but they were too
quick. the sun was setting, and we could hear all the
bugs and frogs getting louder and louder.
that night i walked on the beach alone, singing
"motorcycle drive by" quietly under my breath.
wishing i meant the last line. still wishing.
i've tried pretending, making the story up as you
came along. but i still can't get it out of my mind that
there's something else out there, always will be, in
the back of my mind, on the tip of my tongue.
the endlessness of this.
